Toronto Rock = Lacrosse
Last night I went to my first professional indoor Lacrosse game at the Air Canada Centre.
Lacrosse you say,Whats that? Well it's actually a pretty good sport to go watch, very fast paced, high scoring and very physical.
The Toronto Rock (Toronto's professional lacrosse team) battled against the Rochester Knighthawks and convincingly beat them 16 -10 in an action packed and physical game.
For those of you who don't know, Lacrosse is a team sport originated by several tribes of Native Americans. There are three versions of the modern game: field lacrosse, women's lacrosse and box lacrosse (or indoor lacrosse). All are played using a solid rubber ball and long handled instrument called a crosse or lacrosse stick.
The head of the crosse has a net strung into it that allows the player to hold the lacrosse ball. In the men's version of the game, the net is loose and forms a pocket while the crosse in the women's version has a taut net.
Offensively, the object of the game is to use the crosse to catch, carry (by cradling), and pass the ball in an effort to score by ultimately shooting the ball into an opponent's goal. The defensive object is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick "checking" (and body checking in the men's version).
The sport is popular in North America but is played internationally with increasing popularity. It is the official national summer sport of Canada.
The Toronto Rock's name seems fitting as when you're at a game, different types of rock music is played in the stadium during play and intermissions. The game is very physical, picture ice hockey with all the big hits and fights but not on ice. check out the photos Toronto Rock Pictures
The players are pretty well padded up with gloves and helmets. You can imagine my surprise when I found out (and saw) that its legal to whack your opponent with your lacrosse stick anywhere (legs, head, arms) Madness.
On the old Sal-o-meter I'd give this a 9.5 out of 10. It wasn't the most exciting game (due to the one sided game) though I would definitely go see the Rock again.
