Toronto Eagles Fall Short In Nail-Bitter...
For the second year in a row, the Toronto Eagles were set to face off against the Etobicoke Kangaroos in the main event, and for the first time, the game was played to a backdrop of festivities, food and beverages at the South Humber ground. Both teams had beaten each other once throughout the year, so the anticipation had been building right up to the occasion.
First Half
After the Canadian National anthem and formalities were out of the way, the ball was bounced, and it was game on. The first goal of the day went to the Eagles, as Lockie put one through thanks to some slick work from Marshy and Azza. The second came from a soccering effot by Les, as he kicked one off the ground, and the third major of the day was scored by Eagles webmaster - Cappa.
Sauce was doing an outstanding job in the backline, seeing to it that the Roos were held to a single point in the first term.
In the second, the Roos were the first to score a major, which was quickly answered by a strong mark and goal from George. Marshy was making his presence felt all over the ground, and Dave! ensuring that anything missed by the half back line was being turned back in the right direction. Tarquin slotted one through, and at the half the Eagles lead by 4 goals.
Second half.
The premiership quarter opened with gutsy plays from both sides, and the Eagles brand of footy was personnified by strong tackling from Azza, and marking by George. The Roos put the first goal of the term on the board, which the Eagles turned around with Les feeding Az, who set up Tarquin for his second of the day. This was shortly followed by brilliant passing play by Marshy and George, who set up Lockie for another 6 points.
Some unlucky play in the back end of the field saw the Roos kick a goal, which was quickly followed by another, which let the blue and white back in the game. Just before the end of a quarter, Drew was able to capitalise from a strong mark and 50, as the Roos laid a late hit. At the final change the Eagles led by 22.
The opening of the final quarter was marred by a very questionalable umpiring decision to send off Marshy. Given that there were bodies randomly falling to the ground all day, players and fans were stunned to see the Eagles captain sent off for what was an incredibly minor infraction. Not to be discouraged, the Eagles pressed on with the job at hand, but started to look shaken.
The first 2 goals of the quarter went to the Roos, who were now firing on all cylinders, while the Eagles were scarmbling to stop the inslaught. It was a valiant effort by the Eagles, but the Roos had a sniff and kept the pressure on, kicking their way to tie the scores with 5 minutes reamaining. What appeared to be a certain mark by Azza, was turned over by the umpire in a second controvertsial decision.
This proved to be the difference, as the Roos were able to take the lead by a single point. With 90 seconds on the clock it was a mad scramble, but the Eagles failed to move the ball forward, and the end result was the Roos winning by the slimmest of margins.
The game will be remembered by everyone who attened, and will be written in to OAFL folklore - for many reasons. The Eagles will pride themselves knowing that they had a fantastic season, and met a worthy opponent in the final game. There can only be one winner on the day, and much to the heartbreak of Eagles players and supporters, it was the Roos.
